Chamarel is a small village which is found about 9 kms from La Gaulette. At Chamarel there are two interesting places which can be visited, Waterfall and Colored Earth.

On your way to Chamarel, you will come across a platform with a beautiful lookout point with stunning views over the south west coast. It is possible to see different villagers such as La Gaulette, Le Morne, Case Noyale, and Tamarin.

To go to the waterfall and colored earth, you should take the road to your right hand side. Firstly, you will come across the waterfall. To get a good view of the waterfall, you should walk some meters to a platform. The height of the waterfall is about 127m and is considered the highest waterfall in Mauritius.

To arrive at the colored earth, you should take the road through the sugarcane field. The colored earth is about 2kms from the waterfall. With chemical reaction, the earth has seven colors. Next to the colored earth sight, you will come across a tortoise park. There are about four tortoises. There is also a shop on site where you can buy souvenir.


  • It is better to go at the colored earth during a sunny day to see the seven colors.
  • Inappropriate for people with some handicaps.
  • It is possible to go there by car, scooters, bicycle, or by walking
  • It will take about 6 hours by walk (from La Gaulette to Chamarel and back)
